In the Kaʻū district of Hawaiʻi Island, legend tells of Kauila, a mystical sea turtle who made her home at Punaluʻu. She could change from turtle into human form to play with the children along the shoreline and keep them safe through the daylight hours. To this day the honu is honored as a symbol of wisdom, good luck and protection.
This sculpture carries her spirit in a finish inspired by dusk over the reef. The shell glows deep plum and shifts through violet to electric blue as the light moves across it. The flippers and head shimmer from emerald green to gold, like sunlight catching limu in shallow water.
